Camborne 24pts Cheltenham 18pts

Camborne did enough to ensure safe progress into the second round of the Intermediate Cup with victory over a spirited Cheltenham at the Recreation Ground.

In persistent drizzle the match proved to be a scrappy, error strewn encounter with the Cherry and Whites looking the likely winners throughout.

The home side took an eighth minute lead with a pushover try from a close range scrum with skipper David Roberts touching down for David Mankee to convert with a well-judged kick.

Cheltenham soon reduced the arrears when their fly half Tom Chapman sent over an opportunist 30 metre drop goal and midway through the half they shocked the home supporters by snatching a one point lead. Right wing Paul Bright crossed wide out to round off a well-worked move with Chapman failing to convert.

Trailing 7-8 at the interval fly half Mankee regained the advantage with an angled penalty four minutes into the second half.

Play went from end to end with neither side able to capitalise before "Town" created the try of the game courtesy of some slick handling ten minutes from time. Replacement Josh Stevens did well before releasing dangerous full back Joe Parma who made ground at pace before turning inside a scoring pass for Tongan centre Aisea Fislau to go over on a storming run to the line. Mankee's conversion made the score 17-8 but the visitors quickly sneaked closer courtesy of a simple penalty from experienced scrum half Matt Mudway.

In the closing stages Camborne made the game safe when left wing Rob Ley charged down a clearance kick and gleefully followed up to touch down with the conversion attempt by Mankee going over via both posts.

Down but not out Cheltenham gained some consolation at the death when sustained pressure brought a penalty try converted by Mudway.
