An area of rainforest the size of six football pitches is being destroyed every minute in the Amazon to make way for soya plantations. It's a terrible situation, you might say, but what does it have to do with me?

Unfortunately, if you are a regular purchaser of poultry feed, you may inadvertently be helping this devastation to continue. Many feed brands source soya from places like the Amazon, contributing to climate change, massive loss of biodiversity and the spread of unethical farming practises.

The Smallholder Range is different, and proud to be so. Its non-GM soya, which has been cooked and rolled, comes from Canada, meaning that the finished feed is high in nutritional value, healthy, tasty and ethically sourced.

Some feeds contain cheaper alternatives such as or Brazilian soya (though this has a high cost for the rainforests and the environment) or High Protein (Hipro) soya, which has been processed using hexane. This potentially carcinogenic (capable of causing cancer) distilled petrol product is used as the cheapest and most efficient way to extract the soya oil from the soya. Unfortunately, residues of hexane may be in the oil, causing a bitter smell and because the oil is heated more than once during the process, quality is much diminished. Smallholder Feeds say they don't believe this is acceptable so they only use non-GM soya that has been cooked and rolled to press out the oil.

They also say the Smallholder Range can make it easy for you to feed your poultry and livestock without worrying about the source of ingredients.

They promise they don't: Use animal by-products, fishmeal or gelatine coating on its vitamins Select ingredients that have been processed using harsh chemical solvents like Hexane Use GM ingredients Contribute to the decline and destruction of the Earth's rainforests The Smallholder Range can boast the best, Vegetarian Society Approved feed for all types of smallholding animals, all manufactured with minimal stress to the environment and produced in a drug-free mill to the very highest standards of quality.
