Wessex 18pts Falmouth 12pts - Falmouth learned that playing in the pouring rain isn't one of their strong points as they were easily dismantled away at Wessex in the Cornwall and Devon League.

An early penalty from Darren Russell saw the hosts, who prior to kick off sat at second from bottom in the table, take a three point lead.

As the game progressed, the pitch deteriorated as did Falmouth involvement in the match.

Their scrum was being hit hard by their opposition with no sign of any response.

Wessex had complete control of the game at this stage and used their momentum to drive "The Chiefs" back into their own half and take further control of the game.

A well worked try from Wessex saw tight head prop Lee Mason dive over the line in the 15th minute, with Russell converting. This was much to the amusement of the home fans who hadn't seen a victory at home or away since the beginning of October. Falmouth eventually found their feet in the mud and moved forward into their opponents "twenty two".

When Falmouth applied pressure, Wessex didn't look comfortable defending their lead. But, handling errors and a lack of discipline hindered the visitors' chances of cancelling out their deficit in the score line.

A penalty from winger Jack Brown half way through the first half was taken well, only to be cancelled out by an outstanding try five minutes later.

With a series of pop passes straight from the training ground, Wessex carved open a gaping abyss in Falmouth's backs, leaving scrum-half and strong candidate for man of the match, Luke Hopper, a clear route to touchdown.

Brown for Falmouth and Lee Thorpe for Wessex both kicked good penalties before the end of the first half taking the score to 18-6.

Falmouth had all the work to do in the second half and had more than enough chances to win the match.

Wessex looked tired from the start of the second half and almost played a 15-man defence in periods.

Falmouth came close many times to getting the try that had eluded them in the first half, but handling let them down time after time.

Scott Langdon was yellow carded for a late tackle in the 55th minute, but "The Chiefs" still persisted and constantly put pressure on their opponents.

Falmouth could disappointingly only muster two more penalties from Brown before the end of the match, finalising the score at 18-12.

Falmouth still lay in second place but face tough opposition at home against top of the table Tiverton. Kick off 2.30pm.

Falmouth have also been drawn away against Devonport Services in the fifth round of the Powergen Junior Vase. This match will take place next week on Saturday, December 17.
