Penryn 0pts Kenilworth 35pts

Penryn, after five victories in the Intermediate Cup, crashed to a heavy defeat in a disappointing display against Midland visitors Kenilworth who proved the much better side.

The Borough were unlucky that lock Allen Jordan and number eight Ben Short were both unable to play because of work commitments. Short had hoped to make his first appearance of the season after completing his Fire Service training some four months ago.

Veteran Mervyn Randlesome and Marcus O'Neil filled the vacancies.

Kenilworth made a good start when wing Wayne Morgan kicked a penalty goal after only four minutes.

Penryn held their own until 20 of play when Neil McCornaskey scored a try.

Within the next ten minutes Kenilworth scored two further tries by Matt Hodder and Rob Venning, the second being converted by Morgan to give the visitors a commanding 20-0 lead.

The nearest that Penryn had come to a score was when fly half Richard Hambly narrowly missed with a penalty goal attempt.

In the second half the Borough were hit hard by injuries. Skipper Kevin Hughes sustained a cut head and was replaced by James Angove and prop forward Matthew Keverne had to give way to Trevor Carroll.

After 21 minutes of the second half Wayne Morgan kicked his second penalty goal and before the end John New and Jim Middleton had scored further tries, the second being converted to take Kenilworth's score to 35pts with no response from Penryn.
