BRIXHAM 20 pts

TRURO 15 pts

Playing at Astley Park in the Powergen Cup against Brixham, the "Fishermen" defeated the Cornish city club after a keen contest.

Truro play in a league higher than their opponents and had good reason to expecte to progress, but it didn't work out and on the day they wereoutplayed and outclassed.

Despite the disappointment of the defeat, it has to be said that Truro's adventurous rugby produced two tries against one by the home side.

Truro also enjoyed long spells when they camped near the Brixham try line, but they were unable to convert possession into points.

Prolific kicker and points scorer Steve Larkins was off target with an angled shot at the "sticks," but the home full back, Simon Mitchell, who kicked an early penalty goal, had a thoroughly good match with the boot and he kicked a second goal on the half hour mark.

Building up a head of steam, Brixham attacked the visitors' line and, unable to remain calm, Truro conceded a third penalty which Mitchell put over.

A spirited Truro side put the reverses behind them to put Brixham under pressure and livewire Jamie Carauna put over a nifty drop goal.

Ten minutes into the second half, Brixham scored their try, centre Bevan Armitage, with a blindside run, just managed to get over the line despite the attention of several covering players.

Stung by this score, from a line out catch and drive, flanker Ian Boase was driven over to haul Truro back into the game.

However, Brixham had the nack of always managing to come up with something to give them breathing space and home midfield back Matt Dempsey - very cool and calm - kicked a drop goal.

Attacking at the end, Truro's industry was rewarded when, from a tap penalty move, dangerman Carauna toucheddown, for Larkins to add the extras with his trusty right boot, but it was too little to late as the Fishermen took their place in the next round at the expense of Truro.

On Saturday Truro are at home to Keynsham, in South West One.

Scorers - Brixham - try: Armitage; drop goal: Dempsey; pens: Mitchell 4.

Truro - tries: Boase and Carauna; drop goal: Carauna; con: Larkins.

DEVONPORT SERVICES 5pts

Truro u14s 29pts

Truro Under 14's travelled to the Devonport Services ground on Sunday for their first game of the season and came away with an excellent victory.

The Devonport side began strongly and with a display of superior rucking using the might of their forwards and quick handling, scored a try five minutes into the game.

This wake-up call spurred Truro into action and they began to raise their game, putting pressure on the home side and after a period of relatively controlled recycling, Will Wragg, with a superb dummy pass, launched himself through the opposition to score Truro's opening try which was

converted by Dan Sargent.

Devonport continued to give Truro plenty to think about, giving them the chance to show real heart in their defence, but the Truro backs began to come into their own. Five minutes before half time, some great passing gave full back Jack Parker his first try of the season.

Shortly into the second half Gareth Verran touched down to take Truro further into the lead and Ben Stokes scored two more great tries as the side opened up gaps in the Devonport defence, with hard work from the forwards and good passing and support work.

Throughout most of the second half Truro held the game, using all nine of their replacement players in the squad, including new members Sam Vaughan, Ross Harper and Ben Skuse who was playing in his first-ever rugby game!

Devonport provided good opposition but this time,Truro came out as well deserved winners.
