Penryn RFC have been left disappointed by their exit from the Cornwall Cup after they went out without playing a game because of the recent cold weather.

A fixture pile up on the first weekend of January forced the club into an unenviable position of playing two games in two days.

A task they could not achieve, forcing them to cancel their cup tie with St Ives, giving the north coast club a bye into the next round.

“It’s extremely disappointing because we have been playing well and we felt we were in with a good chance,” said a spokesman for the club. “It wasn’t something we had wanted and it wasn’t something St Ives wanted, but the weather has caused problems.”

The situation arose as Penryn had been set to play St Ives on Saturday, January 2. However the previous week they had a Western Counties league match against Okehampton cancelled after the Devon club failed to make it to the Memorial Ground because of snow near Launceston.

It is Cornwall Rugby Football Union rules that league games must take precedent over cup matches, so when the Okehampton fixture was re-arranged for January 2 - Penryn faced a clash with their cup match.

The rules also stated that the cup game must be completed by Janaury 3, leaving only the Sunday as a possible match day.

Penryn RFC said that it could not play two games in two days and approached the CRFU to ask them if they could switch the match to a midweek game, at St Ives, under the floodlights, but this was refused.

n Penryn will be in action, weather permitting, again this weekend when they travel to Devon to face Tavistock.

Tavy were promoted with Penryn form the Cornwall/Devon League last season having finished in fourth spot.

They have struggled a little so far this campaign and currently sit third from bottom of the Western Counties League having lost nine games and won only two.

However, Penryn will be looking to get revenge as one of their two wins came when the sides last met at the Memorial Ground on October 3.

Tavistock won 26 points to 11 in windswept conditions thanks to an excellent performance from James Kaminski who scored 16 points with a try, three penalties and a conversion.
