One of Helston’s most famous ex-players, Ricky Pellow, turned up to training on Tuesday.

Pellow is currently enjoying much success with Exeter Chiefs as skills coach. The chiefs have had an amazing start to their season, winning all of their seven league games so far.

Ricky started his rugby career in Helston, but went on to win the European cup with Bath against French club Brive in 1998, playing along side greats such as Mike Gat, Phil De Glanville, Jeremy Guscott and Mark Regan.

Ricky has also played for Manchester and Premiership side Worcester worriers and closer to home the Cornish Pirates. He was also a driving force behind Mount bay’s incredible run of success, culminating in a winning trip to Twickenham in the EDF Energy Cup in 2007, acting not only as coach but as one of the key player’s in their side.

Shortly after leaving Mounts Bay he went on to concentrate on playing with Redruth. He also coached at Truro College taking them to the Daily mail RBS final at Twickenham. Ricky has also played countless times for Cornwall.

Ricky’s appearance gave the Helston lads a much needed boost before their clash with Veor on Saturday and the club also welcomed David Martin, the Cornish Clubs Representative to the RFU Council.

With four or five key players still out injured and many other players having retired, the coaches at Helston had another selection headache. However, the atmosphere in the home changing room was focused and confident.

With Jeff Kitto injured Ross Williams took over the captaincy and told his team in their pre-match talk to “man up” and to “front out” the opposition.

However, it wasn’t until the end of the game that Helston fronted up with a team try, placed down by the quick thinking Welshman himself, Dan “Taff” Jones.
