A real ale and cider festival has raised £1,000 for a men’s shed project.

The donation, from Wareham Beerex’s autumn event, will support Wareham Area Men’s Shed in building a new community workshop on land at Swanage and Wareham Rugby Club.

Three of Wareham’s valued institutions came together for the cheque presentation, with Beerex chair Chrisy Mcbride handing the cheque to Men’s Shed leader Harold Forbes at the rugby club.

Mrs Mcbride said: "We pride ourselves in giving something back to the community.

"We chose the Men’s Shed for our latest donation because we believe in their ethos of providing a haven for retired and less advantaged people who need some company.

"The Shed does a massive amount for Wareham and surrounds by making all sorts of useful and impressive things for all sorts of people and organisations, including schools and other charities."

Mrs Mcbride said: "We also agree that they badly need a new workshop because they are clearly growing fast and must find more space to enable more people to join them."

Over the past four years, Beerex has donated £15,000 to good causes including the Rex Cinema, Wareham Hospital and Dorset’s Search and Rescue team.

Wareham Area Men’s Shed also raised an additional £400 by running a raffle at the recent festival.

Mr Forbes described the Beerex donation as "a very generous sum for which we are extremely grateful."

The funds bring the total raised for the new workshop to just over £40,000, collected in just three months since the fundraising campaign began.

The group aims to reach £200,000 to complete the project.

Mr Forbes said: "Getting the support of the community like this is particularly pleasing and significant.

"The more we can demonstrate that the Shed is an integrated and valued part of the community, the better our chances of convincing the big foundations and funds that have larger sums to part with."

Wareham Area Men’s Shed is currently based in rented premises at Lenctenbury Farm outside Wareham.
