A GROUP of young farmers from Somerset have raised £2,500 to go towards a vital farming healthcare initiative based in Bridgwater.

The North Somerset Young Farmers raised the money for the Derek Mead Health Room through various events and fundraising activities.

On October 14, the group presented the official cheque in a heart-warming ceremony at the Health Room, located conveniently at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, Bridgwater.

Alice Joyner, Vice Chairwoman of the North Somerset Young Farmers, emphasised the clubs commitment to fundraising, and said: "Fundraising is a cornerstone of Young Farmers.

"Each club dedicates itself to raising funds throughout the year for select charities, organising a spectrum of events such as harvest services, festivals, carol singing, tractor runs, breakfasts, and various other activities.

"We are elated to lend our support to the commendable work being undertaken by the Derek Mead Health Room.”

The Derek Mead Health Room is operational every second and fourth Saturday of the month, and acts as a vital healthcare resource for farmers across Somerset and further afield.

On stressful market days, an NHS nurse is always on site to provide essential services including blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar testing, and mental health support.

The facility ensures accessibility without the need for prior appointments, and all interactions with the healthcare professionals are held in strict confidence.

Katherine Hawke, Chairwoman of The Derek Mead Health Room Committee, was incredibly gracious and thankful in her acceptance of the money raised by the North Somerset Young Farmers.

"In memory of my father, a fervent advocate for farmer well-being, we established the Derek Mead Health Room," she explained.

"His belief in the need for enhanced healthcare services for farmers is now sustained by the kindness of communities like The Young Farmers.

"This donation reinforces the community's dedication to the welfare of its farmers and will play a pivotal role in sustaining the critical services provided by the Derek Mead Health Room."
