Police are investigating after a large wooden stable block in Glastonbury caught fire at 3 o'clock this morning (Wednesday).

Police discovered the stables on fire on Common Moor Drove at 3.07am.

Fortunately, no horses were involved in the fire.

They notified the fire service, who mobilised two fire engines from Glastonbury and Street, together with a water carrier from Bridgwater and incident support unit from Martock.

On arrival they found the stable block well alight. They acted fast to get the fire under control using main jets and compressed air foam.

Firefighters surrounded the fire and prevented it from spreading, while steadily extinguishing it.

By 4.50am they confirmed the fire was out and the incident under control.

The stable block, made of wood, with a tin roof and measuring 25m x 4m, was 75 per cent damaged by fire.

The cause was unknown and the incident left in the hands of the police to investigate.
