It was an action-packed day for Helston and St Keverne YFC when the club came together to host its annual charity ploughing match.

This year the event was held at Pentire Farm, Degibna by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Martin Wallis.

The club had chosen to support the charity Farming Community Network, which provides vital work for farming and rural families in times of crisis. This includes financial advice, mental health support and mediation sessions relating to farm succession.

With nearly 50 ploughing entries in over a dozen different classes, ranging from vintage hydraulic to reversible ploughs, there was a chance for enthusiasts with machines of all different shapes and sizes to take part. Despite the slightly wet start in the morning, the participants were not put off and made the most of the competition at hand.

The afternoon was host to the popular tractor pull competition, back after a hiatus last year due to poor weather. With over 40 entries in five classes, it was certainly an entertaining spectacle as the competitors raced against each other to achieve the best time.

The domestic tent had an excellent turnout this year, featuring more than 200 entries in cookery, handicraft, photography, floristry, and farm produce.

The day was rounded off with a charity auction, with a plethora of prizes donated by various sponsors.

Sue Gilbard represented the Farming Community Network and presented the trophies to the winners.

A minute’s silence was conducted to pay respect to the late Queen Elizabeth II. As the patron of the National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs since 1957, Her Late Majesty championed the causes of members and agriculture for over 60 years.

Club secretary Ollie Pearce said: “Many thanks must go to all those who helped out on the day, sponsored the event and all those who took part or came along to support this massive event in the club calendar.”

The event raised more than £1,000 for the Farm Community Network.
