Helston 17pts

Newquay Hornets 7pts

On a wet and blustery day Helston pulled off one of the major upsets of the season in the second leg of the Skinner's Brewery Cornwall Clubs Cup semi-final when they defeated Newquay Hornets by 17 points to seven.

Although the score was never going to be enough to overcome the points difference from the first leg, this result sends out a very strong message to future visiting teams to Helston.

Director of coaching Richard Whitney was overjoyed: "We were slightly under strength, but the lads put up a fantastic performance. If we could be consistent then we could challenge for a place in a higher league."

Helston were able to call on the services of scrum half Steve Rendell, returning from a spell away with the Royal Navy as well as prop Ewan Cowie.

The home side were not overawed by their opposition and following a sharp break through the line by fullback James McInnes, a pass to flanker Jeff Kitto continued the move which eventually saw the other flanker Lee Hoskin crash over under the posts to make the conversion easy for fly half and captain Steve Trethowan.

Helston could have added to their score before half time as they were having much the better of the play but had to settle for a half time lead of 7-0.

In the second half Newquay came back into the game, but found themselves down again after a flowing back move allowed winger Barry Williams to cross over far out. Despite being right at the edge of the pitch Trethowan was able to add the extra points to give Helston a 14-point lead.

Newquay then scored a well-taken try plus a conversion to make the score 14-7 going into the last 10 minutes.

With the final kick of the match Trethowan coolly kicked a long-range penalty to make the final score 17-7 to the home side.

All in all a very good performance which sets Helston up for a strong run in to the end of the season.
