Young farmers in East Devon have raised a huge amount of money for charity in memory of one of their friends.
Axminster Young Farmers raised £18,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) with their ‘Axe Sheep Fest’ in memory of much-loved past member Frank Pearse.
The event included speed shearing, a charity auction, tug of war, Devon County Show lamb shearing classes and more.
The event was in memory of Frank Pearse, who passed away in 2019.
Claudia, Frank’s wife, said: "The amazing amount of money raised means a tremendous amount to our family.
"Hopefully it will help find a cure for MNDA, so people diagnosed with it don’t suffer as Frank did."
The club had been organising the event since 2020, but it had been postponed due to COVID-19.
Emily Gay, chairman of Axminster YFC, said: “As chairman of Axminster YFC, I am extremely proud and grateful to be able to help organise this event alongside the Pearse family in memory of Frank Pearse.
“We still can't believe how much was raised for the fantastic charity MNDA and it wouldn't have been possible without a huge amount of team work amongst the club.
“Thank you to Devon County Show for letting us host their Lamb Shearing competition. Also, a massive thank you to everyone who helped out and turned up to support on the day, including the businesses and individuals who donated and sponsored the event.
"The day far exceeded our expectations!"
Charity work is a fundamental part of every Young Farmer’s Club’s (YFC) program throughout the year.
As the new YFC year starts, clubs are looking to recruit new members.
