PEOPLE engaged in a wide range of rural occupations in Devon are urged to apply for awards from the Devon County Agricultural Association.

The DCAA recognises innovation, talent and dedication in a selection of honours spanning training, diversification and long service.

Mervyn Hosking, DCAA secretary, said they were keen to promote and protect tradition and excellence in the countryside.

" I'd like to encourage anyone who is eligible for one of our awards to apply. The winners receive trophies and in some instances a cash prize at this year's Devon County Show in May."

devonshow.co.uk The Prince of Wales Award recognises those in the rural economy who offer young people the best opportunities to gain land-based rural skills.

Nominees could be farmers, landowners, institutions, in partnership or lone craftsmen and who are working as trainers and mentors to young people.

The winner will receive a certificate and a £1,000 cash prize, donated by the Prince of Wales.

Devon men and women who have clocked up more than three decades working in agriculture, horticulture or forestry in the county are eligible for long service awards.

All employees who have completed 30 years of service will receive a certificate and trophy. Cash awards of £50, £30 and £20 will be made to employees who have completed the longest length of service by the closing date of March 14, 2008.

The Devon Diversification Award aims to find the best farm diversification business in the county and offers a first prize of £600, a perpetual challenge trophy and certificate.

The competition is for projects involving a range of innovative ideas and is open schemes large or small, mature or new start.

The award was set up in memory of the late land agent John Neason. The closing date for applications is Friday, March 7, 2008. Judging takes place on April 7.
