Two campervans caught light and the fire spread to a barn in Ilminster yesterday morning (Wednesday).

Fire control received multiple reports of the campervans on fire and so mobilised two fire engines from Ilminster and Chard along with a water bowser from Yeovil at just before midday.

When they arrived, firefighters got to work on the burning campervans which were well alight.

However, the fire spread to a nearby barn so more crews were needed.

Three more pumps were sent from Taunton, Crewkerne and Martock.

Wearing breathing apparatus firefighters worked with hose reel jets, a safety jet and 45mm attack jets and managed to extinguish the fire and, using a thermal imaging camera, checked for hotspots and dampened them down.

Both campervans were destroyed and another vehicle was badly damaged - but the barn was largely saved, only sustaining 15 per cent damage.

The fire service reports that the cause of the fire is currently unknown.
