Cattle and pigs were safe after the barn holding them caught fire in West Devon yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, April 20).

Crews were called to the barn fire in the Hatherleigh area at 5.22pm.

Four teams from Okehampton, Torrington, Chagford and Danes Castle found a barn measuring approximately 30 x 15 metres, holding cattle, pigs and a large number of straw bales, burning.

The livestock were already being moved into a nearby field and the farmer then removed the hay bales from the barn into the field using a tractor.

Firefighters began water relay using a nearby hydrant and after a few hours using hose reel jets, covering jets, a thermal imaging camera and a positive pressure ventilation fan, the fire was brought under control and extinguished.

Their efforts resulted in the barn sustaining just ten per cent damage and the farmer losing 20 bales of straw.
