THREE generations of the same family have been connected to livestock markets in Taunton and North Petherton.

Fieldsman Adam Hayes, whose childhood passion for cattle inspired his lengthy career in agriculture, is celebrating 30 years with Greenslade Taylor Hunt.

Adam said: "What inspired me was going to Taunton Market with my Dad from the age of eight, running the sheets from the three sale rings to the office.

“Every transaction was handwritten into a 'bill book'. That's how the invoices were done.”

He followed in the footsteps of his father, Brian, who worked at WRJ Greenslade & Co, GTH’s predecessor firm, for 43 years.

Adam added: “When I was 16, John Titman, auctioneer and chartered surveyor, took me to farms to source cattle for the prime stock markets and 38 years later I'm still visiting some of the same farms."

South West Farmer:

Adam Hayes, who has worked for Greenslade Taylor Hunt for 30 years.

His role involves growing the firm's livestock side and supporting farmers with selection of their stock for market.

“The best things about my job are that no two days are the same," said Adam.

"When not in market I can be on farms as far down as St Ives or over to Gloucester.

“I've met some real characters over this time and many have become very close friends."

He is joint treasurer and secretary of the South West Winter Fair, which takes place at Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Monday, December 5.

Adam organises the trade stands and sponsorship and the awards dinner.

Robert Venner, partner in charge of Sedgemoor Market, said: "Adam is a vital member of our market team.

"The 'market day' may start days or weeks in advance with a visit on farm by Adam.

"Adam's commitment to his clients and skill involved with selecting stock for market when they're at their best is greatly valued by his clients and us as auctioneers.

“Adam is a team leader on market days and ensures stock are booked in correctly and the droving teams are providing the best service for our vendors and buyers alike.

"Adam's dedication to the firm over the last 30 years has been exemplary and I look forward to working with him for several years to come."

In his spare time Adam enjoys football, cycling and visiting the coast with his wife, Paula, and children, Savannah and Piers.

And just last week, Piers,14, had his first stint helping out at the market.
