Fundraising has been set up to help cover the cost of a funeral for a popular Helston and give him "the send off he deserves."

Former postman and karate Sensei Anthony Woods, known as 'Specs' to many, along with 'Ant' and 'Tiger', died after contracting Covid-19. He passed away on January 4, after almost a month in hospital, aged just 52.

A funeral has now been organised to take place at Treswithian Down Crematorium on Wednesday, February 9 at 2pm, which is open to anybody wishing to attend.

However, with no immediate family around him, aside from two elderly aunts and some cousins, there are limited funds to pay for it.

The fundraising page reads: "The much loved Anthony Woods unexpectedly passed away after a short illness on the 4th January at Treliske Hospital aged 52 years.

"He leaves behind his elderly aunties, whom both are in their 80s, and some cousins. He sadly lost his parents when he was young and had no siblings or children himself.

"However he was much loved around Helston and had some very close friends.

"He was well known for his love of karate and teaching it. He enjoyed volunteering and helping others always. A perfect gentleman.

"We would love to give him the send off he deserves.

"Any contribution to his funeral costs would be greatly appreciated. Any excess funds made would go to Sue Clinton's Cat rescue."

Almost 200 people left tributes on social media following Anthony's death.

One post on Facebook had almost 170 comments left in tribute, with more left on the Sandokai Karate Facebook page, showing the popularity of Anthony in Helston, although he originally grew up in Gweek.
