A smaller entry than usual of 162 suckled calves were forward for the annual Show and Sale of Suckled Calves at Tavistock Livestock Centre on November 16.

Trade was strong for the forward well-fleshed suckled calves and slightly easier for the smaller calves.

The overall top price suckled calf steer and winner of The Cornwall Farmers Cup, as well as a £25 Wynnstay voucher, were Messrs J and G Nankivell of Tavistock for their 7 month Charolais cross which realised £805.

The overall top price suckled calf heifer and winner of the Sully & Co Cup, as well as a £25 Wynnstay voucher, was Westcott Farms of Brentor for their pair of 7 month Charolais crosses that realised £650.

The overall top priced purebred suckled calf and winner of the Westmoor Veterinary Cup, as well as a voucher from Bridgmans, were Messrs CD, DM and SK Alford of South Zeal for three 7 month South Devon steers that realised £805.

Other prize winners included Westcott Farms of Brentor who won the Charolais Cattle Society prizes for best pen of three or more Charolais sired steers with a pen of five 7 months that realised £800.

The best pen of three or more Charolais heifers was won by Mr M H Northmore of Horrabridge with his pen of three 7 months that realised £600.

Top price two or more crossbred steers was also won by Westcott Farms of Brentor, as well as the two or more crossbred heifers and they collected two £25 vouchers from Roger Cole Farm & Shearing Supplies.

The two purebred classes of two or more steers and heifers prizes were both won by Messrs CD, DM and SK Alford of South Zeal who collected two £20 Mole Valley Farmers vouchers.

Top price on the day went to Messrs FG and DM Penwill of Mary Tavy at £970 for their 10 month Simmental cross steer.

Heifers topped at £700 for a 7 month Charolais cross from Westcott Farms of Brentor.

Other notable prices included £800 for 7 month British Blue cross steer from Messrs T and M French of Brentor, £800 for a 7 month Simmental cross steer from Messrs FG and DM Penwil again, £665 for 8 month South Devon heifer from Messrs J and G Nankivell again, £590 for three 7 month British Blue cross heifers from Miss C Wall of Liskeard, £690 for four 6 month South Devon steers from Messrs A Coaker and A Geen of Princetown, £770 for four 5-7 month Charolais cross steers from Mr M H Northmore again, £600 for a pair of 7 month South Devon steers from Mr G Watson of Postbridge and £600 again for a pair of 7 month South Devon steers from Mr K J Watson of Postbridge.
