Eight fire crews were needed to fight a challenging fire that broke out in a grain dryer near Salisbury on Monday night (November 15).

Called at 10.19pm, crews battled through the night to control the fire in Berwick St Leonard.

Initially firefighters and engines were sent from Tisbury, Mere, Shaftesbury and Salisbury.

On arrival they found the grain dryer to be well alight so they called for a water carrier, and later requested that a heavy rescue unit also attend.

It was a challenging scenario, as a spokesperson from Tisbury Fire Station said: "Crews worked hard in very hot conditions to work to extinguish a difficult incident."

The aerial ladder from Salisbury was key to the efforts to manage the fire.

Firefighters from Blandford, Sturminster Newton and Gillingham stepped in as relief during the early hours.

The crew from Tisbury returned to base at 3.45am and with the water carrier team from Wilton did not get back to their station until just before 7 the following morning.
