A barn in North Devon storing straw and farm machinery caught fire on Friday (August 6).

The fire in Bishops Nympton also put two neighbouring thatched homes at risk.

Firefighters from South Molton, Witheridge and Barnstaple were mobilised to the barn fire early in the evening.

On their arrival, they requested an extra pump to attend the fire with compressed air foam, due to the pair of thatched houses close by that needed protection.

The team coated the thatches in compressed air foam to prevent them catching fire.

The fire was brought under control and a relief crew kept watch through the night. They left the straw to burn but ensured that the thatched houses remained safe.
