Coastguards have shared great pictures that document a complicated rescue of a cow stuck on a clifftop in Cornwall.

Tolvaddon and Bodmin Fire and Rescue, alongside Mullion Coastguard Rescue Team and Porthoustock Coastguard Rescue Team were all on scene at a cliff near Church Cove on the Lizard, to help rescue a pregnant cow who had become stranded and in need of extraction.

The rescue mission took place at around 9am on Thursday, July 22 and multiple rescue crews attended the scene.

Upon arrival, rescue crews follows edge safety procedures and set up rescue and extraction equipment in order to allow them to descend and reascend the cliff face in order to reach the animal.

The rescue took approximately 11 hours and, once rescued and checked over, the lucky cow was set free.

In a statement on its social media page, Mullion Coastguard Rescue Team said: "Team paged at 09:00 this morning to assist fire crews from Mullion Community Fire Station, Tolvaddon and Bodmin, with the extraction of a pregnant cow at the bottom of a cliff, near Church Cove, Lizard.

"Edge safety procedures were put in place and a cliff tech was lowered with other emergency services to assist in the extraction of the cow.

"11 hours later, the cow was winched to safety by Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service and then set free.

"A great effort made by all emergency services in attendance today."

In a similar update, Porthoustock Coastguard Rescue Team said: "Four team members containing two cliff techs and two rope operators, were requested as technical rescue back up to Mullion CRT who were assisting Cornwall fire and rescue with an animal rescue.

"Team set up cliff rescue equipment and assisted in various descents and recoveries, team members also rigged as techs, ready to be on hand if we were needed to aid a rescue.

"Our team was released satisfied we were no longer needed on scene and returned to cover the area should another 999 call be made in ours or mullions patch."
