Fire crews are advising farmers to use a special locator app to help them find incidents after a tractor was destroyed and a trailer severely damaged by fire in a field near Tavistock last Thursday (July 22).

At 2.18pm crews from Bere Alston and Tavistock were called to reports of a tractor and trailer on fire at Gulworthy.

On arrival they found that part of the field's hedge was also on fire.

The tractor was completely destroyed and the trailer was 50 per cent damaged in the fire which is reported to have been accidental.

Tavistock Fire Station shared this dramatic photo of a tractor fire they had to deal with in Lamerton earlier this month, together with advice to farmers.

They said: "This week's incidents included a tractor fire in Lamerton caused by a probable electrical fault.

"Crews from Yelverton assisted with water supplies.

"Unfortunately, at the moment, this is one of the farmers' busiest times and leaves them with a lot of sorting out to do and an uncut field.

"With this weather and farmers working flat out, this won’t be the only one - please be careful out there and look after your expensive machinery.

"If you need to make the call to us please use the 'what3words’ app and tell us the best route for access.

"This will give us an accurate location and save vital minutes."

The 'what3words' app makes it easy to find, share and save precise locations using a smart phone.

Land has been divided into three metre squares and each square has been given a unique combination of three words.

These are as accurate as GPS coordinates.
