Around 150 tonnes of hay were destroyed in a barn fire near Frome last night (June 29).

There was so much smoke as the hay burnt that residents were advised to close their doors and windows.

A member of the public reported the barn on fire at Marston Bigot.

At 7.14pm three fire engines were sent from Frome, Warminster and Shepton Mallet, together with a water carrier from Yeovil.

On arrival it was apparent that a barn holding around 150 tonnes of hay was burning.

It was imperative that the fire fighters prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and farm machinery.

While crews worked with hose reel jets, three more fire engines and a water carrier from Bridgwater, Westbury, Shepton Mallet and Trowbridge were mobilised, along with a command support unit from Street and an incident support unit from Martock.

The fire was finally brought under control, but approximately 150 tonnes of hay were completely destroyed.

The fire is reported to have started accidentally.
