Young farmers in Devon have raised thousands for charity with a 24 hour ploughathon.

The event was held to honour Richard Lambert, a former member of Axminster Young Farmers' Club who tragically died last year with a brain tumour.

The ploughathon saw 24 members of the club continuously plough for 24 hours, doing an hour each.

The vast majority of members who did an hour of ploughing had never ploughed before - and some had never driven a tractor!

It was not plain sailing as the weather was terrible and there were mechanical problems, but they completed the challenge of ploughing 20 hectares - and raised an extraordinary £5,435 for the Brain Tumour Charity.

On behalf of the club, member Alice Gay said: "Richard was a much-loved friend and supporter of the club and had previously helped on numerous occasions with ploughathons and muckathons.

"We chose to raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity in memory of him and we have been overwhelmed with the support we have received and as it stands we have raised a very impressive £5,435.

"We are extremely grateful to everyone who helped us to ensure this event to go ahead, this included Hamblys who supplied the tractor and plough and Fred Eames who provided the ground and also paid us £1,000 for the ploughing we did.

"Also to Lemken, Tolley Contractors, Will Bright Contractors and Chris Bailey Engineering who provided us with fuel, parts and mechanical assistance."
