THE Conservative candidate won the district council by-election in Wells on Thursday (May 6).

Tanys Eileen Pullin won with 887 votes against Adam David Fyfe, the Labour candidate, who had just 642 votes.

Conservative candidates were also elected for Wells City Council.

Sebastian Alexander Johns is the new councillor for Wells St Cuthbert Ward with 534 votes and Tracy Deborah Leach was elected the new councillor for Wells St Thomas Ward with 603 votes.

For Wells Central Ward, Sarah Caroline Powell (Wells Independents) and Tanys Eileen Pullin won the votes.

Conservative candidate, Clive Robert Bishop, became the new town councillor for St Benedict's Ward on Glastonbury Town Council.

In Shepton Mallet, four Future Shepton Candidates took their places on the Shepton Mallet West Ward for Shepton Mallet Town Council.

These included: Dave Crisfield (574 votes); Jane Lesley Nicklin (530 votes); Mirka Stadtruckerova (470 votes) and Becky Stokes-Stephens (586 votes).

Bob Champion, the Liberal Democrat candidate also won a place with 442 votes.

And four people were elected councillors for the Parish of the Priddy.

These included: Gemma Lucy Butterell ( with 150 votes); Dean Raymond Collier (with 168 votes) ; Amy Michelle Keith (with 116 votes) and Michelle Phippen (with 138 votes).

The result of the District Council by-election for Wells St Thomas Ward, means the new Political make-up of Mendip District Council is as follows:

  • Liberal Democrats - 23
  • Conservative - 12
  • Green - 10
  • Independent - 1
  • Other – 1
