A man had to be taken to hospital following a barn fire near Bideford.

The 41 year old suffered from smoke inhalation as the fire burned a two storey building in East Hele.

Fire crews treated him on the scene with oxygen before he was then taken to hospital by ambulance.

The fire broke out at just after 12pm on Sunday (April 24).

Fire crews from Torrington, Bideford and Barnstaple fought the fire in the building.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "The building was approximately 15m x 15m in size and suffered 50 per cent smoke and 30 per cent fire damage.

"Crews treated a 41 year old male with oxygen therapy who was then conveyed to hospital by ambulance after suffering smoke inhalation.

"Crews extinguished the fire using one hose reel jet, one covering jet, one safety jet, one thermal imaging camera, and small tools.

"The cause of the fire is unknown."
