There was exceptional quality and trade at the 2021 Spring Challenge Cup at Holsworthy Livestock Market on Wednesday (April 21).
The overall Show Champion and first prize cow was ‘Lydace Superstyle Kalma’, an outstanding freshly calved second calver yielding 46kgs.
She was sold for £2,800 on behalf of Steve and Katherine Pomeroy of Bradworthy to the judges for the day, Mr Ivan and Thomas Cleave of Camelford in north Cornwall.
The Pomeroy family also took the Overall Reserve Champion and first prize heifer with ‘Loford Secretariat Marci’ being a freshly calved heifer and yielding 35kgs.
She was sold at £2,400 - and also went home with the Cleave family.
Also enjoying a successful day was the Harris family from their renowned Winkleigh herd.
They saw their team of heifers top at £2,350 with others selling at £2,150 and £2,050.
Speaking after the sale, director of Kivells, the auctioneers for the sale, Mark Bromell said: “We saw an exceptional trade today throughout the sale, with the overall milk average for all cows and heifers standing at £1,803, with over half milkers selling in excess of £2,000.”
