PLANS are in motion to create a new “mini forest” in Fordingbridge to increase biodiversity in the town.
The tree planting project is being spearheaded by Fordingbridge Greener Living (FGL) and got underway at the weekend.
Jaime Richards-Smart, who is one of the co-ordinators, said: “We are planting Fordingbridge’s first ‘Mini Forest’ at a site by Parsonage Park and Sweatfords Water. NFDC have kindly given us permission to a plant mix of six native species, originally donated to the group by the Woodland Trust.
“We shall be planting birch, rowan, cherry, hazel, hawthorn and dogwood on site and shall look forward to seeing these establish over the next few years. Mini Forests provide a huge benefit to local biodiversity, with a very small footprint.”
Due to coronavirus, the majority of the group’s tree projects have been postponed until the autumn to tie in with the next tree planting season.
