So we had a look back at our archive to see how the occasion was marked in the past - and turned up these amazing pictures from the last two decades.

The lights may have changed, but the ceremony remains largely the same, including the Mayor of the town taking the lead role alongside members of the public.

2020 was different - of course - with no crowds greeting the festive period, but our pictures from 2002, 2013 and 2014 show a town that always celebrates the start of the Christmas period in style!
