A GALAXY of stars including Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet are lending their support to a campaign by a west Dorset charity.

Lyme Regis-based environmental charity The Word Forest Organisation has teamed up with famous names from across the globe, all of whom share a passion for the planet, to launch a range of ethical T-shirts.

Those who have designed a T-shirt for the campaign include Kate Winslet who came to Lyme Regis to film Ammonite in which she stars as Mary Anning.

Other supporters include the children’s animated character, Mr Benn, Ecotricity founder Dale Vince, actors Richard Coyle, Stefan Dennis, Clare Bowen, designer John Rocha, TV weather presenter and meteorologist Clare Nasir, Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway, Private Eye cartoonist Tony Husband, DJ Marc Riley, musicians Pete Turner from Elbow, and Jimi Goodwin from Doves and bestselling author Carl Honoré.

The exclusively-designed range of tree-focused clothing goes on sale today, Friday, November 27, and will be available from The Word Forest Organisation’s ethical charity shop.

The charity will plant a fast growing tree in Kenya for every single T-shirt sold. Additionally, the garment producers will plant a tree for every sale made between November 27-30.

The charity, founded in  April 2017 by environmentalists Tracey and Simon West, says the 'celebri-tee-shirt' contributors jumped at the chance to design something that reflects their feelings about the importance of trees and taking care of the planet.

Word Forest is optimistic that their creativity will bring new eyes to their work and help the charity scale-up their operation to reforest Kenya, which has been deeply wounded by the pandemic.

Since March, the charity has been sending £4k a month to Kenya to buy critical food aid for around 1,600 people in the tree planting communities they work with, so they can keep starvation at bay.

Tracey West CEO of The Word Forest Organisation said: “Our work is made possible by kind-hearted people and corporate partners who believe in us and what we do. Despite the challenges we’ve been thrown with all of our fundraising events cancelled, our team continues to work tirelessly to get more trees in the ground. Trees are the key to solving far more of the world’s problems than simply mitigating climate chaos.”

She added: “We can’t thank these amazing celebri-tee-shirt supporters enough for helping us at this critical time.”
