FIREFIGHTERS in Minehead are today (Thursday) remembering one of their own who lost his life in the line of duty 80 years ago.
Fireman Phillip Dovell, of the Minehead Auxiliary Fire Service, died on November 26 1940.
He was part of a crew from Minehead sent the previous day to assist with firefighting duties in Bristol following the start of The Blitz during the Second World War. En route to the city, the fire engine was in collision with a lorry in Bedminster and Fireman Dovell was thrown from the vehicle, sustaining serious injuries. He died within 24 hours, aged 38.
A social media post from Minehead Fire Station says: "Fm Dovell of the Minehead Auxiliary Fire Service paid the ultimate sacrifice whilst on duty to help others. "Rest In Peace Auxiliary Fm Phillip Dovell."
