A BRIDPORT landmark is entering a 'critical phase' in its eventful history as new people join its management board and future plans are considered.

The Literary and Scientific Institute (LSi) is an architectural feature of the town and planning is under way to ensure it retains its 'equally prominent social and cultural roles in difficult times'.

'Exciting proposals' for the development of the facility are in the pipeline, supporters say.

Bridport Area Development Trust (BADT), which runs the institute, had already begun a review of its business plan but said Covid-19 brought new pressures and uncertainties.

New board member David Lee, said: "The upheavals of the health crisis have coincided with changes to the BADT itself.

"Trevor Ware has retired as chairman of the Board of Trustees, as planned, after five years, during which time the Trust completed the purchase and restoration of the LSi and established the prize-winning West Bay Discovery Centre.

"Trevor is succeeded by Vanessa White, as interim chairman, and will remain as a trustee until the BADT AGM in March 2021."

During 24 years in the NHS, Vanessa, as Chief Executive of West Dorset Community and Mental Health Trust, was responsible for the building of Bridport Community Hospital. She has been a trustee of BADT since January 2020.

She said: ā€œIā€™m looking forward to leading BADT, supporting the continuing success of West Bay Discovery Centre and finding a new way forward for the Literary and Scientific Institute which will support the future of the Bridport area and enable the community to enjoy the facilities of this beautiful and historic building.ā€

The BADT board has recently been joined by Phyllida Culpin, who is a long-time campaigner for social housing and social inclusion. Also new to the Board is David Lee, whose background is in the media.

The Trust said it has has received two 'exciting proposals for the development of the LSi which combine commercial, charitable and community elements'. These will undergo feasibility studies and decision on the preferred option is due in February 2021, after which there will be a consultation period, with the announcement of the future direction of the LSi expected in May.
