AN APPLICATION for a new home and the conversion of an existing property to flats at Greenhill, Weymouth has been refused.
The application, for 23 Greenhill, had attracted a number of objections. The house is considered to be of local importance within the conservation area.
It asked to sub-divide the substantial house into two flats with a two storey side extension and a first floor extension, with a new three-bed home in the garden.
Weymouth Town Council had not objected to the changes although Dorset Council’s conservation officer said the changes would be harmful to the conservation area with the two storey extension “not considered a positive addition.”
Weymouth Civic Society had said it was concerned about the backland development saying it would “result in a cluttered and overcrowded appearance,” while seven letters of objection had commented that the proposal was out of character and would be overbearing and intrusive with a loss of privacy to neighbours.
A planning officer report concluded that “while there are limited benefits these are not considered to outweigh the overriding need to preserve or enhance the character of the conservation area.”
