There aren’t many people who would enlist the help of a 17th-century ghost to raise money for charity, but spirited support worker Mandy Bird from Trowbridge is determined to have a go.

Mrs Bird is spending Halloween night at Devizes’ infamous lockup to raise money for Alzheimer’s Support. A keen ghost hunter and apparition debunker, she is hoping some of its deceased former inmates put in an appearance and will record any spooky goings-on as they happen.

She said: “I’ve been a support worker at Alzheimer’s Support for over eight years and have seen first-hand what a difference it makes to the lives of my clients and their families.

“I've been thinking about an overnighter in a haunted building for a while and heard the Town Hall Lock-Up is haunted by a lady on the stairs. What better way to fundraise and scare myself half to death!”

Babs Harris, CEO of Alzheimer’s Support’s added: “Thank you Mandy, for taking on such a brave and unusual challenge. Legend has it there are a number of spectres floating around the town so who knows who – or what – else might pay Mandy a visit on the night!”
