(70) UTM & (9) OTM PRIME CATTLE

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an entry of 79 prime cattle, when some superb types were penned, met the best trade of the year to date. A new buyer from Boston, Lincolnshire, really set the ring alight and many more cattle could have been sold to advantage.

Top was 238.5ppk, the highest price this year, for a top drawer Limousin heifer from TR Michell of Truro, purchased by Stillmans (Somerset) Ltd. Further superb Limousin heifers from TR Michell at 235.5ppk to Palmers Quality Butchers Ltd, 234.5ppk to A Wright & Son, Boston, 230.5ppk to Palmers Quality Butchers Ltd again, 229.5ppk to A Wright & Son again, 229.5ppk again to Stillmans again, 224.5ppk to A Wright & Son, 223.5ppk, to Stillmans, 220.5ppk to A Wright & Son, 216.5ppk to The Meat Men, Ilminster, a Charolais at 213.5 to A Wright & Son, a Blue at 206.5ppk to Stillmans and a further Limousin at 200.5ppk to A Wright & Son again. An outstanding show of heifers. Further best type Limousin heifers at 223.5 and 209.5ppk from RJ & LA Mitchell & Voke, Chew Stoke, who also sold a best Simmental heifer at 209.5ppk. Barley Blue heifer at 218.5ppk from SER Hunt, Kilve, who sold a plum 526kg Limousin at 208.5ppk.

Native heifers rose to 204.5ppk for a grand Angus (623kg) from DB Hawkins & Son, Awliscombe. Well fleshed Hereford heifers at 203.5, 198.5, 196.5, 195.5, 194.5 and 192.5ppk.

Steers rose to 224.5ppk a smart Limousin from SER Hunt again to Stillmans. Blue steer from the same farm at 205.5ppk to A Wright & Son. Further quality continental steers from TR Michell at 216.5ppk (Limousin) and 207.5ppk (Charolais) both to A Wright & Son.

Heavyweight (740kg) Blue steer at 199.5ppk from R & G Speed, Axminster.

Native steers saw Herefords from EV Tranmer & Sons again at 198.5, 194.5 and 193.5ppk. South Devon at 190.5ppk from DB Hawkins & Son, Awliscombe.

Cattle sold to £1,476.41 for a grand 903kg Simmental steer from DJ & AM Morris, Northleigh. At 11p less, £1,476.30 was a 740kg Blue steer from R & G Speed. £1,459.15 was achieved by Vigar & Son, High Ham with a Blue. Limousin steer (636kg) at £1,427.82 and Blue steer (638kg) at £1,311.09 from SER Hunt. Non assured steers at £1,425.38 and £1,380.23 (Simmentals) and £1,363.43 and £1,323.54 (Limousins) from RW Brunt, Weston Super Mare. Charolais steer at £1,360.98 from G Vining, Biddisham.

Heifers to an incredible £1,400.00 for a 587kg Limousin from TR Michell, who sold further Limousins at £1,293.11 (561kg) and £1,281.12 (only 544kg). Further Limousin heifers at £1,392.41 and £1,280.05 from RJ & LA Mitchell & Voke, who also sold a Simmental at £1,290.52. Charolais heifer at £1,306.83 from G Vining. Blue heifers to £1,293.75 from Vigar & Son. Hereford heifers to £1,356.00 (800kg) from MR & KM Lee & Son, West Buckland. Others £1,337.89 (674kg) £1,324.47 (714kg) £1,290.58 (692kg) £1,277.98 (628kg) and £1,251.25 (650kg) all from EV Tranmer & Sons and £1,250.64 (643kg) and £1,240.23 (665kg) from AAB Rowe & Son, Chilton Trinity. Angus heifer at £1,274.04 from DB Hawkins & Son.

41 BARREN COWS & CULL STOCK BULLS

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a very tight entry of cull cows and bulls at 41 head met another very strong trade. 52m Blue heifer topped at 165.5ppk from EW Clarke & Son, Martock. Cows peaked at 143.5ppk for a Devon from D Barnes, Yarcombe. Shapely Blonde at 136.5ppk from Temuka Ltd, Meshaw. Good Angus cows at 136.5, 133.5, 128.5 and 123.5ppk from N Timms, Weymouth. Limousin cow at 133.4ppk from M Mead, Bristol and a Blue at 129.5ppk, D Gooding, Bridgwater.

Sucklers sold at £1,043.58 and £1,030.58 for Angus from N Timms.

Black and white cows very dear to 134.5ppk for a Holstein from R & J Jones & Son, Stogursey. Friesian cow at 132.5ppk from HC Derryman & Sons. Further meat Holsteins 129.5 and 127.5ppk, FE Hill & Son, Coultings; 129.5ppk, MJ Frampton & Sons, Broadwindsor; 128.5, 125.5 and 124.5ppk from DC Bartlett, Sampford Arundel; 128.5ppk again, LC Curtis, Beaminster; 127.5 and 124.5ppk, CJ & JC Pine, Stoke St Gregory and 125.5ppk, KA Franks & Sons, Glastonbury.

Black and whites topped the day at £1,146.08 for a Holstein from FE Hill & Son, who sold another at £1,090.13.

Angus sucklers at £1,043.58 and £1,030.58 from N Timms.

903 FINISHED LAMBS

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a much smaller entry of 903 lambs sold to a very strong trade for the best quality, helped by a new buyer attending, but generally easier for the rest. The best sold to 235, 225 and 209ppk from SL King. Others 225 and 205ppk from Wallmead Farms Partnership; 224ppk from RF Patten; 208ppk from D Tucker; 204ppk from MW & S Edwards and J Sprake & Partners; 203ppk (2x) from A & N Pearce and 202ppk from CJ Sage and GI Ware.

Heavier lambs sold to £110, £104, £103 and £100 from J Sprake & Partners. Others £110 from D Tucker and DA & AP Gillbard; £108 (2x) and £102.50 from SL King; £103.50 from Wallmead Farms Partnership; £101 from RF Patten and £100 from MW & S Edwards. Overall average £87.53.
