The market report from Sedgemoor Auction Centre for Saturday, September 26 is as follows.

The total stock was 6,145 head.

A short entry of 593 Store Cattle met a brighter trade again to £1,405.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a reduced entry met a more difficult trade as many were busy maize harvesting, however trade still topped at £2000 for a Steambow bred heifer from JH & SA Denbee. Others to £1850 (3x) ET Summerfield & Son and AP Ractliffe, also £1800 (5x) East Avercombe Farm, FG Summerhayes & Son and Ham Farm Partners.

No first quality cows. Others to £1660 R Willcox and £1500 Deptford Farm. British Friesian cows to £1480 and £1420 DEW & WE England.

Jersey cross bulling heifers £460 (2x) C & J Raymond and Partners. Holstein heifer calves £200 JW & LJ Hembrow and £160 for pure Guernsey week old calf from CJ Fowler.

593 STORE CATTLE & GRAZING COWS

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a very, very tight entry of 593 store cattle, part of 838 with the stirks and the weekly sucklers, met an improved trade, particularly for the fleshed and best feeders.

Numbers at 63% of last year’s equivalent week but values up £146 on average, which is phenomenal for this time of year. As long as the weather holds numbers are likely to remain tight to bolster the trade.

Top was £1405 for a very shapely, warm Limousin cross Blue steer (25m & FA) from AJ Weech, West Buckland, who sold further fed Blues at £1230 (3x 24/25m & FA). Top drawer, very shapely, near pure feeding Limousin steers at £1340 (4x 19/20m & FA) from GJ Cottrell, Sampford Peverell, who sold others at £1195 (6x 18/20m & FA). Quality Limousin at £1265 (24m & FA) from WH Beer & Son, Monkleigh, who sold best feeding Charolais at £1230 (3x 22/26m & FA) £1215 (23/26m & FA) and £1150 (23m & FA) and good Blues at £1140 (2x 24m & FA). Dairy bred steers in short supply and great demand. Big framed Fleckvieh sold to £1080 (20m & FA) from Marks Barn Farm Partnership, Merriott. The Fleckvieh being a milk breed that produces a great bull calf. Proper Friesian steer at £985 (27m & FA) P Brock again. Greenslade Taylor Hunt report 120 dairy sired bull calves met a very similar trade to previous weeks to top at £205 from DJ Lewis. Others £185 from Higher Farm (Manston) Ltd and £148 from J & SM Rowland & Son Ltd. Best rearing types £80 plus, mediums £50-£70 and plain types mostly over £20. Fleckvieh to £252 from RF & BA Larcombe.

A much larger entry of 2760 store lambs sold to an even brighter trade, when the increased entry made no difference to prices being achieved. Top call was £100 from PA & DE Wyatt. A bumper entry of 1488 cull ewes and rams sold to a similar trade for the majority, when the heavy ewes looked a shade easier. Best of the continental ewes to £148 from A Mogford. Another reasonable entry of 302 breeding ewes sold to a variable trade, when the best were as keenly sought as they have been all season. Second quality starting to drop in value. Charollais cross flock age ewes from House & Sons topped the section at £148. A run of North Country Mule shearlings sold to £146, £140 (2x pens) and £131 from LAJ England. Suffolk Mules to £132 from A Brand, who also sold some Texel cross shearlings at £126. Older ewes to £100 from H Carnell and RP & JA Brendon. Overall average £101.58.

Goats (42)

A reasonable entry of 42 goats sold well, when large billies sold to £96 from J Ware. Cull nannies to £80 from M Michael. Younger types to £48 from A Sutton. Overall average £61.86.

Stock Rams (16)

A modest entry of 16 stock rams sold to a decent trade. Texel shearlings to £220 (2x) from MW & S Edwards. A large 6T Beltex to £190 from S Russell. An older Texel ram to £180 from Stanbury Farm Partnership. Overall average £140.67.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a smaller entry sold to a good trade for all weaners and forward stores. Cull sows a shade easier.
