A FUNDRAISER from Dorchester is to row the distance of Weymouth to Cherbourg for a mental health charity after facing a battle with anxiety and depression.

Determined Jack Cartwright, aged 22, hopes to inspire other young people who may be struggling, and will row 123 kilometres on a rowing machine next month to support a local charity Family Counselling Trust, which helps children, young people and their families in the Dorset, Hampshire, Somerset and Wiltshire areas.

The distance he is rowing is equivalent to crossing the channel, and the fundraiser is being made possible thanks to Dorchester's Anytime Fitness gym. An online page for donations has been set up for people to donate.

Bravely speaking out about his own struggles ahead of the challenge, Mr Cartwright said: “I am extremely passionate about mental health. I have twice been diagnosed with depression and anxiety - once as an adolescent at school and most recently a couple of months ago.

"The most crippling thing for me is going days and weeks without feeling positive. When I look back at the last few years I appreciate I could have done more to support myself, but what is helping me through my journey is setting goals, working towards a positive future and reconnecting with great friends.

"I have just started an accountancy course, I’m getting fit and active again and giving back in order to support others."

Jack explained that he aims to raise awareness of the devastatingly high rate of male suicide.

He added: "As a male I am speaking up in the hope others will find inspiration to seek support as they are not alone. I have read 76 per cent of suicides in the UK are male.

"Mental ill health can affect anybody in their lifetime, but physical activity can have a really positive impact on your mind. I hope to provide young people with the inspiration to work towards their goals and futures.”

For the past 15 years the Family Counselling Trust charity has been providing psychological support at a low cost of £5 contribution per session to families on a low income.

Challenges faced by children and young people include anxiety, depression, family breakdown, self-harm, bullying and bereavement.
