An exhausted horse had to be lifted from a water-filled ditch in Somerset on Wednesday.

The horses became trapped in a rhyne full of water at Black Bridge in Huish Episcopi near Langport on the morning of September 23.

A fire engine from Somerton was called to the scene at 9.32am, together with a special rescue unit from Bridport and an advisory officer.

The owner was also on scene, and they requested a vet to check the welfare of the horse.

Wearing dry suits, crews used water rescue equipment to try to lead the horse out of the rhyne.

Unfortunately the horse was extremely fatigued and so was unable to get itself out of the ditch.

The rescue team then managed to secure the services of a mechanical digger.

This worked, and the horse was successfully helped to dry land.

After an examination by the vet, the horse was left in the care of its owner.
