Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an increased entry of 103 prime cattle met a sharper trade for the best, which were few and far between. Generally a very 'autumnal' show of early finishing native cattle. Not a vintage week. Quality butchers’ types in insufficient supply.

Top was 218ppk for a very shapely, leaner red Limousin steer from CJM Shackleton, Wiveliscombe. Very similar steer at 216.5ppk from Habberfield Bros, North Newton. Shapely, well covered Limousin steers at 207 and 206.5ppk from BJ Pepperd, Westonzoyland. Dairy bred Blues at 198.5ppk from GW & GM Long & Son, Chardstock and 196.5ppk from Vigar & Son, High Ham.

Native steers rose to 200ppk for a well fleshed pure Devon from W Moore & Sons, Rackenford. Dairy bred Angus at 196 and 192ppk from Habberfield Bros again. Hereford steers at 196 and 191.5ppk from EV Tranmer & Sons, Claverham and 194.5, 192 and 191.5ppk again from RM Sparks & Sons, Wellington.

Heifers peaked at 212ppk for a very shapely and well fleshed red Limousin from W Moore & Sons again, who sold a similar shapely heifer at 201.5ppk. Good lightweight Charolais at 199ppk from TE Harris, Clevedon. Dairy bred Blues at 195ppk from GW & GM Long again and 192.5ppk from Vigar & Son again.

Native heifers rose to 188ppk for a Hereford from EV Tranmer & Sons again, who sold others at 186.5 and 183.5ppk. Lightweight Angus heifers at 179.5 and 179ppk from KA Franks & Sons, Meare.

Steers sold to a strong £1,380.06 for an Angus (748kg) from Habberfield Bros, who sold another at £1,304.53 (683kg) Hereford steers at £1,342.42 (701kg) £1,326.50 (700kg) and £1,313.16 (744kg) from EV Tranmer & Sons. Limousin steers at £1,341.36 (648kg) and £1,300.95 (630kg) from BJ Pepperd, Bridgwater.

Heifers sold to a massive £1,309.23 (702kg) from EV Tranmer & Sons, who sold others at £1,261.95 (705kg) £1,191.47 (774kg) £1,169.36 (622kg) and £1,157.00 (650kg). Dairy Blue heifers at £1,276.28 (663kg) Vigar & Son and £1,222.65 (627kg) GW & GM Long & Son. Limousin heifers at £1,211.02 (601kg) and £1,182.96 (558kg) from W Moore & Sons.

39 BARREN COWS & CULL STOCK BULLS

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a very short entry of 39 cull cattle met a slightly dearer trade. Top was 141.5ppk for an Angus cow (FA) from CGG Maddick, Elworthy, who sold others at 128.5 (FA) and 126.5 (FA). Further Angus at 138.5ppk (NA) AJ Calloway, Watchet and 127.5ppk (NA) from PRJ Larder, Powerstock. Continental cows rose to 134.5ppk for a Limousin (FA) from AJV Welch & Sons, Ashill. Simmental cow (NA) at 130.5ppk from RAD Legg, Whitchurch Canonicorum.

Sucklers sold to £1,042.38 for the Limousin cow from AJV Welch & Sons, Ashill. Angus to £976.43 from AJ Calloway.

Dairy breeds a shade dearer to 138.5ppk for a very good meat Friesian (FA) from DJ Bray, Parracombe. Holsteins to 136.5ppk for a well fleshed type (FA) from New Farm Bowdens Ltd, Langport, who sold an empty steaker at 120.5ppk. Further meat Holsteins at 131.5ppk (FA) LC Curtis, Hursey and 129.5ppk (FA) R & J Jones & Son, Stogursey. Further empty steaking Holstein at 127.5ppk (FA) from House & Sons, Mosterton. Further steakers 117.5 to 118.5ppk.

Dairy breeds sold to £1,025.64 for a 792kg Holstein (FA) R & J Jones & Son. Others £1,025.12, Holstein (751kg & FA) New Farm Bowdens Ltd, £970.89, Friesian, (701kg & FA) DJ Bray and £937.60, Holstein (713kg & FA) from LC Curtis.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report fewer lambs forward at 865 head sold at generally slightly lower levels but still to a very strong seasonal trade. The best sold to 317ppk from E Vining. Others 232ppk from SRA Ham; 226 and 225ppk from Milborne Wick Farms Ltd; 226 and 223ppk from PJ Holloway; 226ppk from N Janes; 224ppk from KJ Winter; 223ppk from GB & MA Holloway and R Golledge and 221ppk from C Reasons and D Hunt.

Lambs sold to £130 from E Vining. Heavies to £127 from Milborne Wick Farms Ltd. Others £125 from ND Janes; £124.50 and £122 from T Rogers; £121 from Spring Farm Partners; £119 from C Reasons and £117.50 from PJ Holloway. Overall average £95.25.
