The market report from Sedgemoor Auction Centre for Monday, August 24 is as follows.

The total stock was 1154 head.

There were very good trades all round, with prime cattle to £1,518.80, cull cows to £1,207.25 and lambs to £124.

(64) UTM & (5) OTM Prime Cattle. Auctioneer’s comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a very short entry of 69 prime cattle, when quality types were in short supply, met a continuing very strong trade.

Top was 218.5ppk for a quality, butchers’ type Limousin steer (533kg) from J & S Vinnicombe, Ottery St Mary. Stronger 659kg Limousin steer at 209ppk from MJ Tuckett & Partners, Exeter. Further heavyweight, Blue (658kg) from JM Cload & Partners, Westport. Native steers to 198.5ppk for a Hereford from AE & PF Triggol, Fiddington. Angus to 196.5ppk from J & S Vinnicombe & Son again.

Heifers rose to 217.5ppk for a classic butchers’ Limousin (530kg) from MJ Tuckett & Partners again. Further more commercial weight Limousins at 209ppk, HJ & HB Case Ltd, Highbridge; 207ppk, A & P Bradford, Bawdrip; 199.5ppk, FG Payne & Sons, Wrangway and 198.5ppk, RF, SR & RG Rawle, Parracombe. Native heifers to 198ppk from HJ & HB Case Ltd again, who sold others at 197.5, 195.5, 194 and 193.5ppk.

Steers sold to a massive £1,518.60 for a 793kg Blue from JM Cload & Partners, who sold further Blues at £1,467.65, £1,332.45 and £1,301.30. A tremendous 780kg Angus from B & P Horsey & Son, West Hatch also broke the £1500 mark at £1,505.40. Good commercial weight Limousin steers at £1,377.31 (659kg) MJ Tuckett & Partners and £1,353.39, BJ Pepperd, Bridgwater.

Heifers sold to an exceptional £1,340.54 for a 691kg Angus from AAB Rowe & Son, Chilton Trinity, who also sold a 687kg Blue at £1,308.74. Further Blue heifer (697kg) at £1,324.30 from JM Cload & Partners again. Limousin at £1,310.10 (660kg) from RF, SR & RG Rawle. Many heifers £1200 plus.

72 Barren cows & cull stock bulls. Auctioneer’s comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a medium entry of 72 cull cattle, when generally conformation and Farm Assurance on the suckler front was in short supply.

Trade still very, very strong rose to 143.5ppk for a well fleshed 739kg Holstein from MM & EH Lucas, Puckington, who sold others at 141.5, 139.5 and 134.5ppk. Further well fleshed Holsteins at 138.5ppk twice from W Read Partnership, Taunton. Good meat Friesian at 134.5ppk from D & I Dyer,Yarcombe. Further good meat Friesian at 132.5ppk from TW & JC Cross, Churchstanton. Steaking Holsteins to 125.5ppk from J Read & Co, Taunton.

Sucklers sold to 141.5ppk for a well fleshed Blue (FA) from AJV Welch & Sons, Ashill. Good meat Hereford 140.5ppk (FA) from AE & PF Triggol, Fiddington, who sold others at 137.5ppk twice. Non assured Simmental at 140.5ppk from MR Adams, Churchstanton. Non assured Charolais at 137.5ppk from Hopcraft Ltd, Churchinford. Further Hereford cows at 137.5 and 135.5ppk from CG & C Vigar, Curry Rivel and 135.5ppk again from RJ & MA Curtis, Yeovil.

Sucklers sold to a very strong £1,207.25 for a 878kg Hereford from AE & PF Triggol, who sold another at £1,145.08. Simmental to £1,143.67 from MR Adams. Blue at £1,133.42 from AJV Welch & Sons. Charolais at £1,115.13 from Hopcraft Ltd. Further Hereford at £1,115.13 from AE & PF Triggol.

Dairy breeds to £1,152.27 for a grand 826kg Holstein from MM & EH Lucas, who sold others at £1,098.04, £1,060.47 and £1,041.03. 890kg Holstein at £1,108.05 from MJ Frampton & Sons, Broadwindsor. More £1,062.30 from W Read Partnership and £1,024.15 from RJ & MA Curtis.

1013 Finished lambs. Auctioneer’s comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report fewer lambs and an overall poorer quality entry of 1013 head sold to another very firm seasonal trade for all presented.

The best sold to 220 and 214ppk from BAV & JE Scriven and from AJ & RG Barber. Others 219ppk from DA & AP Gillbard and C Tooze; 216 and 212ppk from Milborne Wick Farms Ltd; 214 and 210ppk from R Golledge; 214ppk from AF & AH Powell and H Burland and 210ppk from MA & SS Sanders.

Heavier lambs sold to £124 and £108 from Milborne Wick Farms Ltd. Others £119 and £109 from BAV & JE Scriven; £118 from C Tooze; £114 from LM Baker & ME Goodall; £112 from CJM Shackleton; £110 from AJ & RG Barber; £109 from A Parker; £108 from NPJ Coram and £107 from H Burland. Overall average £88.08.
