A demonstration is taking place in the centre of Falmouth on Sunday in support of refugees coming to the UK.

The Refugees Welcome in Cornwall Demonstration will take place on The Moor at 11am on Sunday.

It will include a series of talks and poems from volunteers who have worked with refugees and with Falmouth and Penryn's community refugee sponsorship programme.#

A collection will be taken for the organisation Help Refugees, which provides humanitarian aid to refugees around the world.

Anyone attending has been asked to wear a mask, take along a sign and maintain social distancing by staying two metres apart.

Almost 100 people have shown an interest in attending on the event's Facebook page.

It has been organised by Guin Carter, who said on the event page: "You may have seen the disgusting media coverage of refugees recently. Journalists have been commenting on refugees bailing out water from boats as if they were watching a sporting match rather than the desperate attempt of people searching for a better life.

"These people are human and deserve to be treated as such, not only in our reporting but also in the help we offer as a country.

"The UK government’s response to refugees has been awful, it scrapped the relocation scheme for unaccompanied refugee children in Europe, and we have taken in nowhere near as many refugees as other countries.

"It’s not good enough – and this protest is to show that many of us in the UK care deeply about helping others. We know that we have the resources to help refugees if only the political will was there.

"The real crisis is the lack of humanity for people fleeing war, climate change, and torture.

"Please join us on Sunday at 11am at Falmouth moor in showing that there are people in the UK with our humanity intact, who care about people in distress and wish to help them."

The Falmouth and Penryn Welcome Refugee Families group formed in April 2018, with a wish to help some of the people affected by the civil war and conflict in Syria.

A family subsequently moved into a house in Falmouth in early December last year, after escaping the Middle East.

Last Thursday the group had a stall on The Moor selling sweets and cakes handmade by the Syrian community based in Cornwall, who wanted to raise money to help people whose lives had been devastated by the recent explosion in Beirut.
