Both Falmouth's lifeboats and volunteer coastguards were called out this morning to search for a swimmer reported missing from one of the town's beaches.

The alarm had been raised at Swanpool Beach just after 10.30am.

Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team sent one search team to Swanpool and a second team to Maenporth, to search the shoreline back towards Pennance Point, also known locally as Stack Point.

Both Falmouth RNLI's inshore and all-weather lifeboat were also sent out on the water.

However, a coastguard spokesperson said: "As the team arrived at Maenporth, the swimmer was located safe and well in another area near to Swanpool Beach.

"All oncoming units were then stood down.

"Although we can happily say, this was a false alarm with good intent. The caller did exactly the right thing and dialled 999 and asked for Coastguard.

"Our Coastguard Operations Centre was then able to directly task and coordinate the correct resources to ensure the best possible outcome."
