FALMOUTH has been getting creative to remind people to keep their distance while visiting the town.
It's not usual to see Elsa from the Disney film Frozen, a Cornish pirate or a post lady riding a tricycle while singing poetry, but they are all playing an eye-catching part in keeping visitors safe while coronavirus restrictions remain in place.
The Falmouth Town Team, the partnership between Falmouth BID and Falmouth Town Council, have brought the performers in to help impart social distancing information, help with pedestrian flow and keep people safe over the coming weeks.
The ideas are all part of what is known as the Falmouth Positive Engagement Plan, which has seen a wide range of Covid-19-related safety schemes and projects rolled out over the past three months.
From branded hand sanitiser stations installed throughout the town and a new hope-filled ‘Falmouth, Spirit of the Sea’ rainbow logo, to the instigation of pedestrian-priority streets, retail and hospitality-sector focused supporting toolkits and informative signs at key locations to advise people visiting Falmouth on social distancing, the combined effort is aimed at an optimistic and reassuring view to the future of this year-round coastal destination.
Richard Wilcox, Falmouth BID manager, said: “Of course, there’s a serious message here.
“We as a town team have been on the front foot to rollout a wide range of safety measures to support the town, its resident and business communities as part of our Positive Engagement Plan.
"In fact the plan has also been utilised and adopted as a template by many other towns and villages in Cornwall and we have also been asked to provide regional leadership to ensure there is a Cornwall-wide collaborative approach to the huge challenge we all face.
“Our partner-led approach has seen business and resident communities working alongside the Falmouth Town Team to meet the challenge head on and as effectively as possible.
"A huge amount of planning and provision has gone on behind the scenes to make Falmouth safe and welcoming to our local, and further afield visitors, but of course the responsibility lies in all of us.
"The introduction of performing artists who will adapt their routines to incorporate safety messaging in a fun and imaginative way, is a quirky and original strand on top of the wide range of flexible and responsive support measures already rolled out.”
Mark Williams, clerk to Falmouth Town Council, added: “Falmouth Town Council is pleased to be involved in this original idea.
"The town team has reviewed and instigated numerous supportive community and business-related schemes throughout the Covid challenge and we will continue to creatively implement ideas that reassure and provide safety measures for our residents, businesses and visitors.”
