WEYMOUTH Boxing Club has confirmed it will remain closed for the foreseeable future due to the risk from the coronavirus pandemic.

Mark Ford, head coach at Weymouth Boxing Club, said the risk was too great to open the club and that the closure would probably be the one of the longest in the club's 87-year history.

Mr Ford said: "It’s with a heavy heart, the sad news that Weymouth Boxing Club will not open until at least October this year due to the risk from Covid-19.

"I feel the risk is too great to open the club, and hope the boxers old and new will be out running on the beach and swimming and making maximum use of the wonderful local areas we have here both in Weymouth and Dorset.

"It’s the first time in my 20 years at the club we have ever closed for so long and I think, possibly the longest in last 60 years."

Weymouth ABC has been running since 1933 and is the only amateur boxing club in Weymouth. The club is run entirely by volunteers and any money made is put directly back into the club.

Mr Ford said the pandemic could not have come at a worse time for his budding young athletes. "The worst part is the closure comes of the back of two great wins from two of our young up-and-coming boxing stars who have both had great wins in March.

"Bailey Stone boxed in his first bout and showed no nerves and great boxing skill and strength to outbox and beat his opponent from Sturminster Newton, we are very proud of him and his guts, determination and dedication.

"Also Zack Harrop, another upcoming star, showed great fitness and boxing skills to beat his opponent in his match against a taller strong boxer form Blandford, but Zack kept his cool, listened to the coaching and showed amazing skill to again, outbox and beat his opponent.

"I would invite anyone to please contact myself for any boxing and any fitness training tips, as I am not only an England Boxing coach but I am also a personal trainer, you can ask any questions about fitness both on our boxing website and Facebook, Whatsapp or Messenger."
