Queues of up two hours or more have been reported in Helston this evening by ice cream lovers keen to get a taste of some colourful soft-scoop.

Mr Whippi King of Desserts has been in Helston today, set up in the grounds of Helston Rugby Club until 9pm.

He has already seen plenty of custom, with one person saying they had to wait 40 minutes before they reached the front of the queue - before others added they had been forced to wait for more than two hours at its peak.

Helston missed out on a visit last month from similar sounding ice cream seller Mr Tee King of Desserts - not to be confused as the same company, although they both sell ice cream trays with a variety of sweet toppings.

The town lost out to Falmouth in a fan vote on Facebook, coming third behind Penzance.

That visit also saw long queues form, with one customer near the start estimating that more than 80 people were behind her and it was still growing as she left, and waits of 40 minutes were reported.

Posting on his Facebook page on Thursday evening, Mr Whippi revealed that Helston would now be getting ice cream from him.

In a bold claim to make in a county known for its clotted cream ice cream, he said: "Come and try the most delicious, best ice cream in the country!"

And he launched a competition to win two free trays, two slushies and a tub of sweets on his Facebook page.

Ice cream trays cost £5, sweet tubs are £3 and slushies are £2.

Customers are warned to keep to social distancing rules and stay two metres apart.

The company is separate to Mr Tee, with Mr Whippi stating on his page: "For all of your information we are no longer associated with any other similar companies.

"We have in the past been advised and have done business with another business you may be familiar with, however since that has stopped we are not connected in any way.

"We are Mr Whippi - King of Desserts and have never claimed to be another company at any time."
