MORE than 20 organisations have come together in order to build a network to support the Weymouth community.

The aim is to support the town by providing support through sharing volunteers, bids for funding and creative ideas, the ultimate goal being to build a community which supports each other.

The currently unnamed group is asking the local community to come up with an eye-catching tagline which represents what they are trying to achieve.

One of the organisations playing a part in this initiative is social enterprise group, Weyforward.

Baron Miles, director at Weyforward, said: “During lockdown, a group of people decided they would start making an email list to contact local community groups and over 20 of them turned up to the online meetings.

“The aim is to get people to work together. I think that has been a weakness in Weymouth over the past few years, we need to rebuild that trust and I think we're beginning to move towards that.

“If people have a collective mindset, you're probably more likely to win bids and attract investment and tourists.

“Over the lockdown period we saw the community coming together to support each other and being a bit more social minded. Local business is important but it's also important to look after the more vulnerable people and changing how we have done things in the past.”

The group has been working towards localising food supply and infrastructure, along with working with the Weymouth area development trust and ideas league and getting young people involved with the BID and other local businesses.

Members of the public are able to send in suggestions for a catchy tagline or a hashtag and a poll will be posted on the Weyforward Facebook page next week, with the winner announced the following week.

Mr Miles said: “With the competition we're just trying to get the public involved and start this kind of conversation up among them.

“We want the tagline to sum up what we are trying to do in a couple of words.”

If you have an interesting idea for a tagline, you can send it to Weyforward at baron@weyforward.net or to the Weyforward Facebook page.
