UTM PRIME CATTLE

A small entry contained a high proportion of excellent quality butchers’ beasts but trade for all was on fire and many more could have been sold.

Super heifers again this week from Messrs. Julian of Summercourt standing top with a pair of Limousins hitting 225p/kg, purchased by Chris Dale of Dales Family Butchers, Helston and R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

The third Limousin x from Mr. Julian at 221p/kg stood overall top value heifer realising £1,244 to David Wilton of Peter Morris Butchers, St. Columb.

A further entry of Limousin crosses from Miss S.P. Gribble of Lanner hit a premium of 218p/kg with her heaviest 712kg heifer top value at £1,460, both bought by R.J. Trevarthen Ltd.

Leading Friesian for Mr. T.F. Sampson of St. Newlyn East selling at 121p/kg and £912 to Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh.

STORE CATTLE

A superb entry containing a large proportion of single-suckled steers and heifers including 34 from Nicholls & Co. of Sandy Lane, Redruth selling to a wonderful trade with no shortage of demand with many buyers going home empty.

Top price steer just shy of the £1,400 barrier at £1,390 was a superb Charolais at just 20 months old.

No shortage of demand and more could be sold to advantage.

Aberdeen Angus x steers to £1,075 also for Mr. Dale and £1,170 for Nicholls & Co. whose nice Simmental x steers sold to £1,040 at 16 months old.

Charolais x steers for Messrs. J. & S. Trembath of Zennor sold to £1,055 with four younger 16-month old steers at £905.

On the heifer side, Nicholls & Co. had some super prices with a top of £1,150 for a 22 month old Charolais x, with other breeds from the same farm seeing a younger South Devon & Limousin x pair at 14 months old make £865.

This week’s sucklers included three nice older cows with Hereford x calves at foot for Messrs. R. Lawry & Son of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth topping at £1,300 for a Charolais x with their other Charolais and also a Hereford x both realising £1,250.

Limousin x outfits from Messrs. B.K. & E.L. Piper of Sithney, Helston with young calves hit £1,010.

REARING CALVES & STIRKS

Another good entry this week with continued strong trade for all types with some superb calves entered.

Top price at £350 was an older British Blue x bull from Messrs. W. Marsh & Son of St. Stephen, with younger Blues to £258 for a 6-week old calf for Mr. D.J. Heller of Blackwater.

Young Simmental crosses at just 3-weeks old for Messrs. J.P. White & Partners of Lanreath saw bulls to £250 and £245, with a fortnight old Hereford x at £225 for Messrs. R.M. & C.D. Rundle of Mevagissey.

Heifer calves led by Messrs. W. Marsh & Son of St. Stephen with Limousin crosses to £232 and a month-old Aberdeen Angus x at £218.

A variation in quality and finish, with the plainer types less sought-after.

Top price at £108.50 and 247p/kg was for a smart trio of shapely 44kg lambs for Mr. M. Monk of Chacewater bought by R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

This was closely followed by butchers’ quality 47.8kg lambs from Messrs. C.H.P. Powell & Sons of St. Ervan selling at £106.50 to J.V. Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.
