Two more confirmed cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Cornwall in the last 24 hours, although the number of hospital deaths remains static.

The Packet reported on Friday how confirmed cases of the virus in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly jumped by almost 300, seemingly overnight, due to a discrepancy in the way they had previously been recorded by the Government.

That sharp rise took the overall figure to 885, and that figure rose again in yesterday evening's update from Public Health England, with two further confirmed cases, bringing the total to 887.

Today's figures from NHS England show that no further people have died in the county's hospitals after recording a positive test result for Covid-19, or in the south west region as a whole.

It means that the total number of deaths recorded at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust sits at 65, with the total for the Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust remaining at 26, giving a total of 91 for Cornwall following a rise of one on Thursday.

It marked the first new hospital death in exactly a month in the county.

However, the NHS England figures only cover deaths in hospitals and the most recent figures for deaths in all settings in Cornwall – hospitals, care homes and the wider community – from the Office for National Statistics was 203.

Nationally in the last 24 hours, a further 18 people who tested positive for Covid-19 have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 28,889.

Patients were aged between 54 and 94 years old. All patients had known underlying health conditions and their families have been informed.

A further three people died in hospital after not having a Covid-19 positive test result, but where the virus was recorded as a direct or underlying cause of death.
