New anti-littering signs have been installed by goat grazing enclosures on Portland after six died choking on dog poo bags.

Created by Litter Free Dorset, the signs have been erected by Old Hill in response to the death of the goats last year.

Su and John Illsley, from Fancy's Farm, were shocked to find their goats dead with dog poo bags hanging out of their mouths.

The illustrated goats on the new signs remind dog owners that they are not bins.

A spokesman for Litter Free Dorset said: "Most dog owners are caring, responsible individuals, however there are still some people who do not clean up after their pets.

"It’s important for people to remember the devastating impacts of littering. It’s not only an eyesore but can harm and kill animals and other wildlife. We are asking all dog owners to make sure when they pick up the poo, they bin the bag too."

According to Dorset Council, littering has increased since lockdown restrictions have eased and it is reminding people to take their rubbish home.

It says dog poo is a litter issue which increases 'when people think they aren’t being watched'.

Its advice is to:

• Always bag it and bin it

• Reminder to call out any friends who are being lazy. There is no excuse for leaving your dog’s poo

• Always take spare bags with you so you can give one to a fellow dog owner

Speaking at the time of the death of her goats, Su Illsley said: "We have had a total of six die now, they all had the same symptoms.

"The council owns the land but it's not their fault or any organisation's fault. It's dog owners who can't be bothered to put the poo bags in the bin or take them home with them."
